The destination for the SimPilot Forum's twentyfourth Flight Rally is Salzburg Airport in Salzburg, Austria!
On July 16, 1910 the first powered aircraft taxied onto a new racetrack that
was constructed in Salzburg, Austria. The short flight ended with the crash of
the Bleriot aircraft, but the pilot Josef Auer only suffered minor injuries. On
May 12, 1912, 15000 Salzburg citizens gazed in admiration as the aviator Karl
Illner flew over the parade grounds in Maxglan during one of the first air
shows, and is the location of the airport today. Thus began the life of
Salzburg Airport.
Salzburg Airport was given it's name in 1945 when the United States Army aquired it from German occupation. The Americans dismantled the ME 262 jets at the airport, and later shipped the parts back to the United States. Twin engine DC3 and single engine Stinson L5 aircraft were brought in to be used for connection flights using the 1200 by 60 metre runway which had been surfaced with concrete by the Germans in 1944.
Salzburg Airport was the first Austrian airport to become part of Europes scheduled air traffic again, and it was to Salzburg's advantage that the central headquarters of the American occupation authorities was based there. Through this a good overseas connection was promised for the passengers.
In 1954 Salzburg became the cradle for the reconstruction of Austrian aviation. A year before the recovery of Austrian air sovereignty, the Americans agreed for the training of pilots for the future national and civil Austrian aviation. Using Swiss sports aircraft with Swiss registrations, Austrian pilots were finally allowed again to fly powered aircraft in Austria.
On October 25, 1955 Dr. Hans Deutsch became the managing directory of Salzburg Airport. The old concrete runway was renovated, which became the airport as it is known today handling 1,326,729 passengers in 2002. As a side note, two historical figures hold claim to the beautiful city of Salzburg as their birthplace. Simon Hradecky of Nomissoft's Airline Simulator 2 fame, as well as Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, the famous classical music composer. Three cheers for Salzburg, Austria!
There is scenery for this airport in Microsoft's "Flight Simulator" version 5.1 to 2004, Lago's "Airline Simulator", Nomissoft's "Airline Simulator 2", as well as BAO's "Europe 1 Scenery Pack" which can be used with Microsoft's "Flight Simulator 5.0".
Download the file LOWS.GIF in Files Section 3 (Navigation) for an aeronautical chart of the area. Current aviation weather for the airport can be found at NOAA's Web Site on the Internet.
Please join us on Sunday, January 25th for the twentyfourth SimPilot Forum Flight Rally, and make sure to visit Conference Room 5 (Fly Online/FS Rallies) after your flight to let us know all about it!
