In 1989 subLogic released the "Hawaiian Odyssey Scenery Adventure" scenery disk (SD-HAW) for Microsoft Flight Simulator. This scenery disk contained some of the most detailed scenery for the simulator at the time, as well as a few obscure and strange things never before seen in Flight Simulator.
The "Hawaiian Odyssey Scenery Adventure" scenery disk covered all of the major Hawaiian Islands, as well as a couple of undocumented minor islands. In addition to the Hawaiian Islands scenery, several areas of fantasy scenery was also provided, as well as a treasure hunt adventure game built into the scenery.
One could activate large white arrows by flying into a special yellow box on the ground that would lead you through all of the islands (as well as directly over a seventeenth-century Barkentine sailing ship), and then lead you directly into an abyss where you could find a treasure... the hidden jewel of the goddess "Pele".
The scenery disk also included several areas of fantasy scenery. This scenery was activated by flying into the Mauna Loa cauldera, where you could enter one of seven portals which would transport you to some other-worldly places. These places included the Great Pyramids, a giant grand piano, a giant kitchen (complete with a giant housefly on the kitchen counter), the Chicago area tilted on it's side, several airports and runways built up in the sky (including a large aircraft carrier), an area with nothing but trees and a runway, and the "Fortress Pyramid". The Fortress Pyramid was essentially an airport built inside of a giant pyramid. You could fly in through a window in the side of the pyramid, or in through a large opening in the top.
Directly from the back of the product box:
Explore a tropical paradise with the "Hawaiian Odyssey" Scenery Adventure! The islands contain many wonderful sights; one of them also contains a mysterious gateway to another world unlike anything you've ever seen!
Hawaii's natural beauty makes it the perfect area for both visual flight sight-seeing and VFR or IFR cross-country navigation. The disk covers the entire island chain in incredible detail. Downtown Honolulu and Pearl Harbor on the island of Oahu are exactingly recreated. The 380-mile long Hawaiian Island chain contains 26 airports, many with Visual Approach Slope Indicator (VASI) landing lights, runway threshold markings, fixed clearance and touchdown zone markers. Numerous ILS, VOR, and NDB nav-aids are available for instrument navigation.
Fly into the volcanic crater at Mauna Loa and you'll be transported to an alternate universe of strange and dazzling sights, where normal concepts no longer apply. Explore this world at your own risk; things are not always what they appear to be.
"Hawaiian Odyssey" also offers the very first structured scenery adventure! Locating the hidden jewel of the goddess Pele isn't easy. You'll have to find and follow an intricate set of clues scattered about the islands that, with luck, will guide you to your goal. The treasure hunt will challenge all of your flying skills, but the reward is an experience you'll never forget!
Anyhow, the files included in this archive (SD-HawFa.zip) are basically an historical tribute to subLogic's Hawaiian Odyssey Scenery Adventure scenery disk from yesteryear. subLogic's scenery disk can be still used today with Lago's "Airline Simulator" and NomisSoft's "Airline Simulator 2", Microsoft's "Flight Simulator" versions 2.0 to 95, as well as subLOGIC's "Flight Assignment: Airline Transport Pilot", "Jet", "Thunder Chopper", and their unusual simulator "UFO".
Included in this archive are the files "SD-HAWFA.SMS" and "SD-HAWFA.IN". These files are for use with subLogic's "Scenery Management System" (the successor to their "New Facilities Locator") that shipped with Lago's "Airline Simulator" and NomisSoft's "Airline Simulator 2", as well as subLOGIC's "Flight Assignment: Airline Transport Pilot", and their "USA East" and "USA West" scenery disk packs.
If you have the Scenery Management System installed on your hard drive, copy these files to your simulator's "\SMS" subdirectory. If you have the New Facilities Locator installed, first rename the file "SD-HAWFA.SMS" to the new filename "SD-HAWFA.NFL", and then copy it to your simulator's "\NFL" subdirectory.
The "SD-HAWFA.IN" file (which has been renamed to "SD-HAWFA.IN" from the original filename "MINE.IN") is the file that the New Facilities Locator and the Scenery Management System generates when you select "Define your own location" from the NFL/SMS menu from within your simulator. Usually you would then run the utility "GENMINE.EXE" which would read the file "MINE.IN" and generate the "MINE.NFL" or "MINE.SMS" databases. It is included in this archive so that you can add more locations to it, or edit the existing ones.
