jzIntv Screensaver v1.0 ======================= ©Copyright 2006, Rich „Weeds„ Nagel - All rights reserved What the heck is jzIntv? ------------------------ jzIntv is an excellent Intellivision emulator for Windows created by Joe Zbiciak. Find out more about this great freeware emulator at http://spatula-city.org/~im14u2c/intv on the Internet, and experience some of yesterday's best console gaming that the Mattel Intellivision had to offer! Visit the Blue Sky Rangers at http://www.intellivisionlives.com on the Internet to learn more about the original Mattel Intellivision game console. A jzIntv Screensaver? --------------------- Have you ever wished that you could run jzIntv along with your favorite Intellivision demo cartridge ROM as a Windows screensaver? The jzIntv Screensaver is a launcher for Joe Zbiciak's jzIntv Intellivision emulator, and can be run as a standard Windows screensaver using your choice of any Intellivision game cartridge ROM file. Game cartridge ROM files that work well when used as a Windows screensaver with the jzIntv Intellivision emulator are most any of the original Intellivision demo cartridge ROM files... they automatically start up by themselves, as well as loop back to the beginning when the demos are completed. The jzIntv Intellivision emulator is strictly a command-line program that requires numerous command-line parameters that must be manually typed in order to run it. Using the jzIntv Screensaver setup program with this emulator makes it extremely easy to run any Intellivision game cartridge ROM file as a Windows screensaver, along with your choice of several of the emulator's more common options... all from within a user-friendly interface and menu. System Requirements ------------------- The jzIntv Screensaver will run on any PC capable of running the jzIntv Intellivision emulator, and requires Windows 98 or higher. Note that the screensaver loader "jzIntv Screensaver.scr" is actually a 16-bit Windows application, while the screensaver setup program "jzIntv Screensaver Setup.exe" (as well as the actual jzIntv Intellivision emulator) is a true 32-bit Windows application. The screensaver (both loader and setup program) has been successfully tested running under Windows 98 Second Edition, as well as Windows XP Professional Corporate Edition (with Service Pack 1 installed). Hence, the screensaver should run properly under Windows ME, Windows 2000, as well as Windows XP Home Edition (with any of the service packs installed) without any problems. Installation ------------ To install the jzIntv Screensaver, unzip all of the files contained in the archive jzIntv_Screensaver.zip to your Windows directory on your hard drive. To upgrade the jzIntv Screensaver from any previous versions, simply overwrite the existing files within your Windows directory. Optionally, you may wish to create a shortcut on your Windows destop (or your Windows Start Menu) for the jzIntv Screensaver setup program "jzIntv Screensaver Setup.exe". Initial jzIntv Screensaver Setup -------------------------------- Start the jzIntv Screensaver setup program by running "jzIntv Screensaver Setup.exe" from within your Windows directory. Since this is the first time that you have ran the jzIntv Screensaver setup program, you must first set up all of the applicable file paths, options, and preferences by clicking the "Setup" button within this utility. When prompted, select the directory on your hard drive where the jzIntv Intellivision emulator (jzIntv.exe and SDL.dll) is located (i.e. "C:\Intellivision\jzIntv"). You will also be prompted to select the filenames and paths of the main Intellivision game console system ROM files. These files are the "Executive" ROM file ("Exec.bin"), the "Graphics" ROM file ("GROM.bin"), and the "Entertainment Computer System" ROM file ("ECS.bin"), and are usually located within the directory where the jzIntv Intellivision emulator is installed on your hard drive (i.e. "C:\Intellivision\jzIntv"). Lastly in the initial setup process, you will be prompted to select the directory that contains any game cartridge ROM files that you may have on your hard drive, as well as be given a choice to select a game cartridge ROM file to use with the jzIntv Screensaver. As mentioned above, game cartridge ROM files that work well when used as a screensaver with the jzIntv Intellivision emulator are most any of the original Intellivision demo cartridge ROM files (for the reasons mentioned above). jzIntv Intellivision Emulator Configuration ------------------------------------------- Usage of the jzIntv Screensaver setup program's various features and options is fairly easy and self-explanatory. All buttons, check boxes, dropdown boxes, and text-entry boxes have descriptive popup "tooltips" that will be displayed when hovering your mouse over them. Simply move your mouse cursor over any of these items anywhere within the utility, and a small box with detailed instructions will pop up! Note that almost all items within the setup program have a shortcut "hotkey" (i.e. ), which is the underlined letter displayed on the specific item (the complete shortcut hotkeys will be displayed within the popup tooltips mentioned above). A few game cartridge ROM files may require enabling the Intellivision "Entertainment Computer System", or the "IntelliVoice" module. Simply click the respective check boxes to enable these features. The "Rate Control" slider selects the speed at which the jzIntv Intellivision emulator actually runs while the screensaver is running. Slide the bar to 0/10 (0) to disable rate control, or to 10/10 (1) to enable automatic rate control. You can also adjust the rate control to force the emulator to run much faster (computer CPU speed permitting), which can be quite entertaining , depending on your choice of the game cartridge ROM file that you selected to use with the screensaver. The "Additional Parameters" text-entry box is where you can type any other additional command-line parameters that you wish to be passed to the emulator when actually running the screensaver. After configuring the jzIntv Screensaver and jzIntv Intellivision emulator options to your liking, simply click the "Exit" button to save your current settings, and to exit the jzIntv Screensaver setup program. Running the jzIntv Screensaver ------------------------------ Select "jzIntv Screensaver" as your active screensaver from within the dropdown box in the "Screensaver" section of the Windows "Display Properties" control panel. Note that the jzIntv Screensaver includes a setup window when clicking on the "Setup" button within the Display Properties control panel, but the text in the text-entry box within this setup window should be left at it's current default ("jz.bat", minus the quotes). To exit the screensaver when it is running, simply exit the jzIntv Intellivision emulator in the usual way (by pressing the "F1" key on your keyboard). If you wish to select another game cartridge ROM file for use with the jzIntv Screensaver (or change any of the jzIntv Intellivision emulator's options), simply run the jzIntv Screensaver setup program again. Programs and Utilities ---------------------- The jzIntv Screensaver setup program was programmed and created exclusively using NeoSoft's NeoBook for Windows v4.1.3a, with many portions of the GUI interface and program routines from my jzIntv Launcher (version 1.10) utility. More information about jzIntv Launcher can be found at http://www.cmoo.com/~snor/weeds/Intellivision/jzIntv_Launcher.txt on the Internet. The jzIntv Screensaver loader was coded and derived based upon David Goldsmith's AnySaver utility. More information about AnySaver can be found at http://www.dgolds.com/anysaver.htm on the Internet. Jasc Software's Paint Shop Pro v7.02 and NeoSoft's NeoPaint for Windows v4.5a were used for all image editing. The MIDI music "BurgerTime Intro" was composed on a Casio CZ-1 keyboard (yeah, I know... it's as old as the original Intellivison game console, damn thing weighs a ton too ), and sequenced using Twelve Tone Systems' Cakewalk Professional v3.01.
