Frequently Answered Questions

What do I need to run an Applet?
[Netscape Now] You need a "Java-enabled" web browser or an Appletviewer for your platform. Netscape offers browsers for most platforms (be careful with beta releases).

I tried to submit my score but it didn't work!
There are several possible reasons, e.g. your network access is restricted, the traffic is too high, this server is too busy or down or the database is not available. You can request the current high-score table to check the connection before submitting.

Some of your classes are lacking or corrupted!
No, they are all in place and functioning. Your network connection has probably been broken temporarily and your browser took it for the end of the file. Try to reload, and if that does not help, clear your cache or restart your browser.

Can I put your Applet on my pages?
JavaTetris may be used freely for non-commercial purposes, as long as you provide a hyperlink to the home page.

Can I have the source code for Tetris?
I am working on a documented HTML-version which I will make available when I am done.

What do I need to run JavaTetris as an application?
You need a Java interpreter, e.g. that included in some of Sun's products (Java Development Kit JDK or Java Runtime Environment JRE). Some operating systems (e.g. Linux) might have an interpreter already built-in, too. Start the interpreter with java Tetris or (if you have a Java file system installed) make Tetris.class executable (chmod ogu+x) and call it directly. -h provides a short description of the command line parameters.
Note that sound effects and high-score tables are not supported.

Known Problems

While Java programs can run on most platforms, there is also a dark side of the picture: A developer has to face "irregularities" in all Java Virtual Machines (e.g. web browsers) on all these platforms. I have run Tetris on some of them, but by far not on all and I encountered numerous strange things. I hope this will become better in new releases.

Report problems not listed below, please. Do not forget to provide information about your browser and operating system and look out for exception messages (Netscape: Options/Show Java Console) if possible. Of course your critics and comments are welcome, too.

general problem Java applications have no (official) audio support in 1.02

Note for Linux Netscape Netscape users: While some installations seem to work perfectly, others crash frequently when faced with Java Applets (some even kill the Xserver). More information about the reasons and a workaround is available at this page.
