Fast Tracker II v2.09a and DOSBox v0.72 MIDI Input Patch -------------------------------------------------------- The files included in this archive consist of an installation of "Fast Tracker II v2.09a", which was a "Tracker" format music composing program for DOS, and was updated and released by Magnus Högdahl and Fredrik Huss of the demo group "Triton" back in 1999. Also included is an installation of DOSBox version 0.72 that has been patched to enable MIDI input functions when running Fast Tracker II, as well as several handy Windows start menu shortcuts for your Windows desktop (or start menu). Both programs have been optimally pre-configured to run "out of the box" on most computers, with only a few minor configuration changes to DOSBox: 1) Unzip the "SBLive" directory contained in the "Fast_Tracker_II_v2.09a_and_DOSBox_v0.72_MIDI_Input_Patch.zip" archive to the root of your hard drive, maintaining the directory structure of the archive in verbatim. 2) Unzip the included Windows shortcuts contained in the "Start Menu" directory in the "Fast_Tracker_II_v2.09a_and_DOSBox_v0.72_MIDI_Input_Patch.zip" archive to the usual location on your hard drive in verbatim. 3) Edit the DOSBox configuration file "DOSBox.conf" (located in the "C:\SBLive\Fast Tracker II\DOSBox" directory) using Windows Notepad to select the proper MIDI input device (usually "inconfig=0"). Refer to the "DOSBox v0.72 MIDI Input Patch Devices.txt" file (located in the "C:\SBLive\Fast Tracker II\DOSBox\Documentation" directory) for more information about configuring the MIDI input and output devices for this patched version 0.72 of DOSBox. 4) Click the "Fast Tracker II" icon, and then begin composing some awesome retro tracker music! The following is a brief description of the directories located in the Fast Tracker II installation directory: FASTRACK\CONFIG = This directory contains a backup of the archive's default Fast Tracker II configuration files. FASTRACK\DOCS = Refer to the files contained in this directory for detailed Fast Tracker II documentation, help, information, and manuals. FASTRACK\SAM = Copy your digital "IFF", "RAW", "SAM", "SMP", and "WAV" format sample files to this directory. Note that your "RAW", "SAM", and "SMP" sample files should be in raw 8-bit signed "PCM" format to be compatible with Fast Tracker II. FASTRACK\XI = Copy your Fast Tracker II "XI" format instrument files to this directory. FASTRACK\XM = Copy your "MOD" and Fast Tracker II "XM" format module files to this directory. FASTRACK\XP = Copy your Fast Tracker II "XP" format pattern files to this directory. FASTRACK\XT = Copy your Fast Tracker II "XT" format track files to this directory. Note that the DOSBox keymapper file "Mapper.txt" has been slightly edited in order to prevent conflicts when using the keyboard shortcuts that Fast Tracker II supports. Simply press the "SHIFT" key on your keyboard, in conjunction with the usual DOSBox keyboard shortcuts: SHIFT+ALT+ENTER = Switch to full screen and back. SHIFT+ALT+PAUSE = Pause emulation. SHIFT+CTRL+F4 = Change between mounted disk-images, update directory cache for all drives. SHIFT+CTRL+ALT+F5 = Start/Stop creating a movie of the screen (AVI video capturing). SHIFT+CTRL+F5 = Save a screenshot (PNG). SHIFT+CTRL+F6 = Start/Stop recording sound output to a wave file. SHIFT+CTRL+ALT+F7 = Start/Stop recording of OPL commands. SHIFT+CTRL+ALT+F8 = Start/Stop the recording of raw MIDI commands. SHIFT+CTRL+F7 = Decrease Frameskip. SHIFT+CTRL+F8 = Increase Frameskip. SHIFT+CTRL+F9 = Terminate DOSBox. SHIFT+CTRL+F10 = Capture/Release the mouse cursor. SHIFT+CTRL+F11 = Slow down emulation (Decrease DOSBox Cycles). SHIFT+CTRL+F12 = Speed up emulation (Increase DOSBox Cycles). SHIFT+ALT+F12 = Unlock speed (Turbo button). Also note that I have set Fast Tracker II's predefined "Panning Envelopes" (which can be found within Fast Tracker II's "Instrument Edit" screen) to the following: Predefined 1 = Default Fast Tracker II Panning Envelopes 1 through 6. Predefined 2 = 100% Left Panning Envelope. Predefined 3 = 050% Left Panning Envelope. Predefined 4 = 000% Centered Panning Envelope. Predefined 5 = 050% Right Panning Envelope. Predefined 6 = 100% Right Panning Envelope. This is to assist with composing standard Amiga 4-channel "Ultimate SoundTracker" or "ProTracker" "MOD" format modules. On an Amiga computer running the Ultimate SoundTracker or ProTracker music composing programs, the four channels are hard-panned to the following: Channel 1 = Left (Lead) Channel 2 = Right (Accompaniment) Channel 3 = Right (Bass) Channel 4 = Left (Percussion) Lastly, note that the preset "User Defined" color scheme is of my own creation, and is how I've been using Fast Tracker II for well over a decade :) ENJOY!
