Weeds Key ========= for SimCity 3000 Unlimited The History of Weeds Key ------------------------ Established in 1900, Weeds Key is a small island in the Carribbean. Starting out as a miniature city using information from the SimCity 3000 Resource Center Knowledge Neighborhood Article #0940 (http://www.sc3000.com/knowledge/showarticle.cfm?id=0940) with no cheats on hard difficulty level, and in-game disasters enabled, the budget just barely balances out each year with it's small population. The island has almost no crime, very low pollution levels, predominantly medium land values, adequate fire protection, low taxes, low traffic by means of a tiny mass transit system, and happy citizens. Neighboring areas include the small islands of Atlantis Island, Clearwater Key, Oceania Isle, and Stiltsville. The smallest disaster could easily wipe out this tiny island community, and not unlike many of the chains of small islands in the Carribbean, the citizens of Weeds Key pray for a calm and uneventful hurricane season! City Statistics --------------- City Name: Weeds Key Mayor Name: Richard F. Nagel Current Date: 11/10/1941 Current Population: 8,660 Current Funds: $1,726 Terrain: Original Terrain Size: Miniature Trees: Original Buildings: United States Difficulty Level: Hard Disasters: Enabled Cheats Used: No Technical Info -------------- Weeds Key was created using Maxis' SimCity 3000 Unlimited on hard difficulty level with in-game disasters enabled, and no cheats were used in the development of the island. Two "Reward Buildings" are located on the island, the "Geyser Park" as well as the "Haunted House". I'm not sure if these reward buildings are specific to the SimCity 3000 Unlimited edition, and they may or may not be included in the original SimCity 3000. Snapshot Album of Historical Archives ------------------------------------- Included is a complete "Snapshot Album" covering the complete history of Weeds Key, as well as other points of interest on the island. The snapshots and related snapshot data files are for use with the SimCity 3000 Unlimited edition, but can be viewed with any image viewing program that supports viewing "JPG" format images. The Snapshot Album consists of: Weeds Key-Jan. 1, 1900-22194.jpg Weeds Key, after initial zoning and infrastructure. Weeds Key-Feb. 17, 1903-22843.jpg Weeds Key, after initial growth and maximum security prison. Weeds Key-Jan. 21, 1905-23506.jpg Weeds Key, after mayor's house and haunted house. Panoramic View of the Island ---------------------------- Also included is a small Java applet and HTML file that will display a 3D panoramic view of Weeds Key, as well as a large screenshot of the island created from several smaller seperate screenshots. Simply open the file "Weeds_Key.htm" with your Java enabled web browser of choice. Then, move your mouse over the 3D window, or use the arrow keys on your keyboard to scroll the panoramic view. Click and hold your left or right mouse buttons, or use the + and - keys on your keyboard to zoom in or out. Click on the thumbnail for a full-sized view of the island. Installation ------------ NOTE: I absolutely *REFUSE* to use Microsoft's term "folder" . Substitute "folder" anywhere "directory" is mentioned in this documentation if you don't understand the meaning of "directory". 'Nuff said about "folders" ! Copy and unzip WEEDSKEY.ZIP into your main SimCity 3000 Unlimited directory (usually "C:\Program Files\Maxis\SimCity 3000 Unlimited"). If you're using PKUNZIP v2.50 for DOS (yes, DOS is still alive and kicking even in Windows 98 SE, and I still use it ), make sure that you add the command line parameter "-D" to recreate the subdirectories that are contained in the archive (i.e. "PKUNZIP WEEDSKEY.ZIP -D "). If you're using another utility such as WinZip, make sure that you check the option "Use Directory Names" and unzip the archive into your main SimCity 3000 Unlimited directory. This process will create several subdirectories within your SimCity 3000 Unlimited directories, and will unzip the files contained in the archive to their proper subdirectories (including the "Snapshot Album" files (see above)). In Conclusion ------------- This is my second completed city for SimCity 3000 Unlimited, so be gentle (i.e. take it easy with the "Tornado" and "Whirlpool" disasters, OK? ). I've been an avid player of SimCity Classic and SimCity 2000 for many years now. Needless to say, the SimCity 3000 Unlimited edition was quite a learning experience. There are quite a few more variables involved in the creation of a successful and stable city, and a tiny miniature-sized island community can be very difficult to maintain. Frankly, I'm quite pleased with how Weeds Key turned out -:) Hey, I would live there, especially with all of the excellent fishing waters and great lobstering areas . Why in the world did you disable the "F9" feature in SimCity 3000 Unlimited? This feature was enabled in the original SimCity 3000 (which I do NOT own) with the BAT version 1.1 upgrade, and after hexing through many of the Unlimited edition's files I can see *MANY* traces and remnants of it still in there! Another aggravating aspect of this game are the *MANY* bugs and problems when attempting to import any new user-created buildings into the game: http://snor.cmoo.com/weeds/simcity_3000/sc3kubug.htm http://www.cmoo.com/~snor/weeds/simcity_3000/sc3kubug.htm !
